In supposedly staid Singapore, few things remain more of a paradox than the fact that prostitution is actually legal. Brothels operate in certain districts under government regulation, and the most famous of these is Geylang -- a quiet residential neighbourhood transformed after sundown, its small streets lined with working "cathouses" plying their trade; a cavalcade of Chinese, Cambodian, Laotian, Thai, Malaysian, Filipino and Vietnamese girls all clearly on offer. "These streets leave you with the ghosts of memory", writer Gerrie Lim suggests, because "here in Geylang, there is a language that transcends our earthly bounds" in "this strange dance of desire". Showcasing the work of innovative Canadian photographer Scott Woodward through an array of edgy visuals -- shot in an actual Geylang brothel -- this book is an eloquent reminder of how, even with the world's oldest profession, truth can indeed be far stranger than fiction.
