Sir Joseph Banks (1743-1820) was one of the 18th-century's great promoters of science, a central figure in the British scientific establishment, and one of the longest-serving Presidents of the Royal Society. This five-volume work is a catalogue of Banks's own library which he maintained in his house in the then fashionable Soho Square. During his years as President of the Royal Society (1778-1820) the library was frequented by the learned society of the 18th century; gentlemen with a letter of introduction were welcomed. For today's scholar this bibliography of natural history is a comprehensive guide to scientific literature from the 16th through to the 18th century and a companion work to Louis Agassiz's Bibliographia Zoologiae et Geologiae (Thoemmes Press, April 2001).
