Although the large-print text is written to be accessible to young readers, Bullard doesn't shy away from the occasional challenging word such as algae, camouflaged, deciduous, or predator when it's the best choice available and a useful term for junior naturalists to know. Each book includes a simplified world map that highlights regions where the particular biome can be found. The many photos are well-chosen and beautifully reproduced. Desert Colors includes information on how animals' coloring can often conceal them within their surroundings but notes that certain prominent markings will actually warn off predators. The underwater settings in Ocean Colors include many surprisingly colorful plants and animals, as well as myriad shades of blue. Greens dominate the lush environs showcased in Rain Forest Colors, adding eye-popping pigments from fruit and biome residents. From beasts, birds, and bugs to mosses and birches, Woodland Colors spotlights noteworthy species from the world's forests.

While the link between biomes and colors seems tenuous, these appealing books may be useful in school settings as simply written introductions to biomes and/or colors."--Booklist.
