Empowered College Reading is a text that provides motivating content, motivating features, and motivating software to help students become successful college readers. Features include: Motivating Content Unit One, "Motivated Reading," presents information about motivation and the ways it applies reading. Chapter 1 introduces the concepts and stages of motivation. Chapter 2 presents specific reading processes that promote both motivation and comprehension. Chapter 3 adds information about reading at efficient speeds, which is an important way to maintain motivation. The Four Stages of Motivation: Engage, Focus, Monitor, and Reflect. Self-motivation for any activity can be broken down into these four steps. Linda Lee has taken these four steps and combined them with the stages of active reading to empower students to become better readers.


Motivating Features The Motivation Measure Survey- Knowing where you stand is a key first step to success. Available at the beginning of the text and on the CD-ROM, the Motivation Measure survey will give students information about their current motivation for reading college material. It includes questions about their attitudes and techniques. Their scores empower them to take further control of their reading. The Motivation Measure survey begins on page XXXI. Motivation Matters Readings- Sometimes we need to be inspired. Presented between the units of the text, the five Motivation Matters readings highlight issues of reading and motivation, giving students insight on how to take control of reading and inspiring their continued success. Motivation Matters readings are marked by red pages, and begin on pages 177, 183, 381, 388, 528.


The Selections- Empowered College Reading includes over 70 reading selections of essays, articles, letters to the editor, and textbook material. This variety of readings keeps the material fresh and engaging. Selections range from just a few paragraphs to many pages, and cover 19 different academic disciplines, including advertising, biology, business, health, history, music, psychology, sociology, and technology. The Subject Area Table of Contents on page XI lists all the selections. Chapter Overview. A map or outline identifies what the chapter will cover and lists the major section headings. In some chapters, students will be instructed to complete or create these visual aids. Beginning on page 535, the Reader includes the kind of textbook selections, essays, and articles that are assigned in freshman and sophomore courses. It begins with six paired readings and ends with two complete chapters. The paired readings cover Psychology, Business Communication, Marketing, History, Business, and Biology. Reading for Learning from. The Reading for Learning from. pages are guides presented in the Reader before each subject area.


They include an overview of the topics covered in typical freshman courses, the kind of information to look for in the readings, and reading tips. Two Complete Textbook Chapters. The reader ends with two complete textbook chapters from other college textbooks - one psychology and the other history. A chapter each from Marriages and Families 5e by Nijole V.
