A beloved son of New Castle, Chuck Tanner spent a lifetime in baseball both on and off the field. After eight seasons of an up-and-down career as an outfielder. Tanner transitioned to managing the Chicago White Sox and then the Oakland Athletics. But it was his stint as the manager of his hometown team, the Pittsburgh Pirates, that would elevate him to an icon of the game. From 1977 to 1985, Tanner crafted a gritty, talented, Pirate brand of baseball alongside legendary players like Willie Stargell and Dave Parker. In 1979, with the Sister Sledge hit "We Are Family" as their theme song and a raucous Western Pennsylvania fan base behind them, Tanner's Pirates captured a World Series title. Through extensive research and interviews, author Dale Richard perelman presents the life and times of baseball's Mr. Sunshine.
