Prof. Kerryn Phelps AM, MBBS(Sydney), FRACGP, FAMA, Hon D Litt (UWS) is one of Australia's best-known doctors and public health and human rights advocates.She has been a general practitioner for over thirty years and is the founder and principal clinician at Sydney Integrative Medicine and Cooper Street Clinic in Sydney, and is a pioneer in the fields of health communication and integrative medicine in Australia.Prof Phelps is an adjunct Professor at Sydney Medical School and a Conjoint Professor at the University of New South Wales Medical Faculty. She is a conjoint Professor in the National Institute of Complementary Medicine at University of Western Sydney.She has appeared in the media for over 25 years, bringing messages about healthy lifestyle to the attention of the public. Her television credits include the ABC's EveryBody, TEN network's Good Morning Australia, the Nine Network's Today Show and A Current Affair, a documentary on the Kokoda Campaign and was the narrator for the Seven Network's Last Chance Surgery. She has been the subject of stories on 60 Minutes, Australian Story and This Is Your Life.


In 2000 Prof Phelps was elected as the first female President of the Australian Medical Association, a post she held for the maximum term of three years. She guided political and practical solutions to the medical indemnity crisis and the medical workforce shortage. Under her presidency, the AMA developed its first position statements on complementary medicine, on sexuality and gender diversity, on the medical response to bioterrorism, and on the association between climate change and human health. She advocated strongly for the rights of refugee children in detention and for a solution to the problems of health disparity and disadvantage for indigenous Australians.Prof Phelps has presented a variety of health and fitness programs on radio, and has been a regular newspaper and magazine columnist.She has been the popular health columnist for the Australian Women's Weekly for more than twenty years.She is a member of the New South Wales Ministerial Taskforce on Preventive Health and is a member of the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners' Integrative Medicine Strategic Education Advisory Group.Prof Phelps is also a member of the board of Hockey Australia.


From 2009-2012 she was President of the Australasian Integrative Medicine Association.In 2003 she was awarded the Centenary of Federation Medal for services to Medicine and Australian society.On 13 June 2011, she was awarded an Order of Australia for service to medicine, particularly through leadership roles with the Australian Medical Association, to education and community health, and as a general practitioner.In 2014 she was awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Letters by the University of Western Sydney.She is the author of General Practice: The Integrative Approach, Ultimate Wellness: The 3-Step Plan, The Cancer Recovery Guide and The Mystery Gut.
