World Premiere Production at Soho Rep: Public Obscenities premiered at acclaimed theater Soho Rep in New York City in the spring of 2023, where it enjoyed an extended, sold-out run. Best of Spring 2023: Named one of Time Out New York's "30 Best Off-Broadway shows to see in Spring 2023". Bilingual Play: The text of Public Obscenities switches back and forth between the English and Bangla languages, immersing the audience and reader deeply in the multicultural world of the play. In performance, much, but not all, of the Bangla dialogue is translated into English in projected supertitles. Some is intentionally left to the imagination for English-speaking audience members. Awards for Shayok Misha Chowdhury: Chowdhury was awarded the Relentless Award by the American Playwriting Foundation and the Jonathan Larson Grant by American Theatre Wing for his musicals written with composer Laura Grill Jaye. Institutional Affiliations: Chowdbury has taught and directed at Stanford, Brown, NYU, CalArts, Fordham, Syracuse, UArts, Hunter College, CMU, and Williams. Upcoming Major Productions: The Soho Rep production of Public Obscenities will move to DC's Woolly Mammoth in Fall of 2023 before returning for another run in NYC at Theatre for a New Audience.
