Walter J. Scott, M.D., F.A.C.S. , is Chief of the Division of Thoracic and Esophageal Surgery at Philadelphia 's Fox Chase Cancer Center, one of the first National Cancer Institute-designated Comprehensive Cancer Centers.
Dr. Scott is board certified in thoracic surgery. He specializes in the treatment of cancers involving the chest, with a special emphasis on the treatment of lung cancer. He has been recognized as a Top Doctor in Philadelphia and as one of America 's Top Doctors for Cancer Treatment (Thoracic Surgery) by Castle Connolly, 6th Edition. His research interests include the use of positron-emission tomography (PET) for the diagnosis and evaluation of patients with lung cancer, the development of minimally invasive surgical approaches for the treatment of thoracic cancers including lung cancer, esophageal cancer, thymomas and thymic cancers and malignant pleural mesothelioma. Dr. Scott received his medical degree from the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine in Chicago, Illinois. He completed his general surgery residency and fellowship in cardiothoracic surgery at the University of Chicago Hospitals.
Dr. Scott is a Fellow of both the American College of Surgeons and the American College of Chest Physicians. He is a member of the Society of Thoracic Surgeons and the American Association for Thoracic Surgery. He serves as an editorial reviewer for a number of journals including the Journal of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery, the Annals of Thoracic Surgery, Lung Cancer, and the Journal of Thoracic Oncology. He also serves on the Thoracic Oncology Network of the American College of Chest Physicians. He is a member of national clinical trials groups, including the Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group, the Radiation Therapy Oncology Group, and the American College of Surgeons Oncology Group.
