Vern Monty was retired with all the rest of the Texas Rangers when the Civil War was over and the Federal Governor hired his own State Police Force. Vern, with two of his friends, started capturing and breaking wild horses.They had forty good horses that they had broke for saddle horses when Vern made a trip to town to resupply their needs for another two or three months. It was a three day trip and when he returned home he had only three donkeys in his corrals and found his two friends riddled with bullets and tracks where some riders had driven off his horses. He made a vow to catch and kill all of these horse thieves and cold blood killers if it took him a life time to do it.Vern ran into more trouble than he wanted, but he was determined to finish what he started.
