These are notes that I use in a course in American politics. The focus is upon the role of government in our lives and upon fiscal and social welfare policy. There is a heavy emphasis upon historical and cultural development as a method of instruction. Three distinct epochs are studied: pre-industrial America; the progressive era from 1890s through the New Deal; and contemporary politics from the Great Society through Obama.
