Portsmouth at War tells the story of Pompey during the Second World War. These years saw great changes for the city and its people. Portsmouth also played an important part in the war at a national level. This book uses nearly 200 photographs to illustrate events in Portsmouth from 1939 to 1945, from the first days of war to the Blitz, from D-Day to VJ Day, also covering the post-war reconstruction of the city. Above all it is about the experiences of the city's people: air raid wardens, nurses, the Home Guard, firemen, war workers, evacuees, the Woman's Voluntary Service, those made homeless by bombing, the armed services and many others. This book features photographs from the collections of Portsmouth Museums & Records Service, many of which have never been seen before by the public.
