MI5's postwar Deputy Director-General maintained a secret diary which he dictated every evening. The document was intended as an internal record of his activities and participation in clandestine operations, espionage investigations, Whitehall policy discussions, royal scandal, molehunts, Official Secrets prosecutions,political machinations, covert deception campaigns, leak enquiriesannd colonial counter-insurgency. Codenamed WALLFLOWERS and classified TOP SECRET, the file was only to be read as a work of reference by a limited number of senior Security Service personnel.
