Getting Glam at Gram's is a picture book for children ages 3-8 centred around racially and gender-diverse children that creates space for the queer community. It emphasizes a positive, fun, and celebratory feeling throughout the book, which serves as a much-needed antidote at a time when gender exploration and drag queen shows have come under attack in the United States. The book's illustrations are playfully drawn; there's a Pixar-like quality to the individual traits of each character. "Gram" is portrayed not as a dowdy, old-fashioned granny but a stylish, young-at-heart older woman (with tons of fashionable eyeglasses). In the author Sara Weed's words, "As a queer parent in a book-loving family, I want to read stories with my kids that they can connect with. I want my children to read stories where they see themselves represented. There is a need for more books with 2SLGBTQI+ protagonists, with the main character being seen as more than their sexual and gender identity." She was motivated to begin dreaming up what these stories could look like, and found an ally and creative accomplice in Erin Hawryluk, a professional illustrator and Sara's childhood friend.

The book is inspired by Sara's and Erin's childhoods as well as their own children's experiences. Sara and Erin grew up across the street from each other, and coincidentally, each of them had their firstborns in the same hospital on the same day. In Erin's words, "We bonded as new parents and as we watched our children grow so did our enthusiasm to create children's stories together. We all share a passion for creating and as unofficial aunts to each other's children, our skills, perspectives, and family experiences unite us." Their creative process has blossomed over the years, often occurring while their children have played together. As Sara says, "Often unprompted, we have fun dreaming up characters and ideas while chatting on a couch or laughing around a kitchen table. Sometimes our kids wander into our conversations or intentionally jump in to share their thoughts.".
