Sarah never realised how much her life would change when her Huguenot husband died and together with her son, Jabez, she would have to leave their lodgings in the weavers loft at Spitalfield and head for the village of her youth. Jabez was a studious young man and whilst she worried about the privations that lay ahead, Sarah never realised the extent of the violence which would be unleashed upon them. Nathan Larkin was apprenticed to his father, the village blacksmith, learning the secrets of forging iron, when one dark evening he found Sarah and Jabez close to death. He didn't realise the chain of events that would follow when he extended the hand of friendship on that bleak night and the effect it would have on all their lives in the years to come.
