The proposed book will be an advanced introduction to a range of issues in political philosophy today: justice, freedom, democracy, rights and duties. These will be explored through a series of practical political problems associated with the multicultural character of contemporary societies. Each of the six chapters in the first part of the book focuses on a key contemporary political philosopher (Brian Barry, Will Kymlicka, Bhikhu Parekh, Jurgen Habermas, Anne Phillips and Seyla Benhabib) and explores the ideas of equality, freedom, democracy and rights to which each philosopher subscribes. In particular, each philosopher's attitude towards multiculturalism is considered. The second part of the book offers chapters on six political issues presented by multiculturalism: freedom of speech, freedom of religion, language rights, representation rights, national identity and citizens' duties. Each chapter includes a case study to illustrate the issue in question. Each of these chapters will be linked back to the philosophers discussed in part one so that readers can see how their ideas can be related to practical issues.Overall readers will develop an understanding of how the ideas of political philosophy are relevant to a range of important contemporary political issues.
