Excerpt from Report of the Proceedings at the National Banquet Held at the Prince of Wales Theatre, Sydney, on the 17th of July, 1856, to Celebrate the Establishment and Inauguration of Responsible Government in the Colony of New South WalesHe would not deny he felt happy that it. Had fallen to his lot to respond on behalf of a branch of the service with which he had been asso cisted from his earliest infancy. (cheers) Not only, indeed, had he him self been always associated with the navy, but members of his family for many generations had belonged both to the army and navy; among others he might mention that he had a brother-in - law who held the post of admiral. He could not add much to what had been said by a previous speaker who had alluded to the services rendered both by the army and navy, but this he would say, that wherever the naval force were engaged they had always endeavoured to do their duty, and in doing so, were inuenced only by a sense of their responsibility to their sovereign and their country. (cheers) In the recent war they were not found wanting, and the fact that some of his own family were en gaged in the war just terminated; added to the pleasure he felt in bear ing testimony to the good service which the eets and armies had rendered their country.
