Like many books in the Old Testament, 2 Samuel opens with the death of a major figure that had come to the end of their part in the history of Israel. Saul, the first king of Israel, had not played his part well. He had rebelled against God. He had allowed his ego and the fear of others to overcome him, until finally he had died by his own hand on the battlefield.Enter, a new king, David. Not without his own character faults, David quickly ascended to the throne to become Israel's most loved king. He was a poet, a musician, as well as soldier amongst his many other talents. He had his failings as well, allowing his love for beautiful women to lead him into several disasters.
