Craig R. Smith, M.D. is a physician and entrepreneur whose career has spanned academic medicine, the bio-pharmaceutical industry, and environmental biotechnology. Dr. Smith began his professional career serving on the faculty of the Department of Medicine at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. Dr. Smith practiced and taught Internal Medicine and did research on the treatment of infectious diseases, the mathematical modeling of clinical outcomes, and the emerging fields of pharmocoepidemiology and pharmacoeconomics.


After 16 years at Johns Hopkins, Dr. Smith joined Centocor Inc. as Vice President of Clinical Research. After directing the clinical development of the Company's therapeutic monoclonal antibody products and later serving a leadership role in Business Development, Dr. Smith returned to Baltimore and cofounded Guilford Pharmaceuticals Inc. Under his leadership Guilford grew into a fully integrated, publicly traded pharmaceutical company. After 12 years leading Guilford, Dr. Smith retired to Florida where he learned of a new method for converting carbon dioxide into ethanol using hybrid algae.


Dr. Smith recognized the potential value of this technology for carbon capture and utilization and cofounded Algenol Biofuels Inc. Dr. Smith led the development of Algenol's research programs and served as Chief Operating Officer for 8 years before retiring again to travel with his wife and spend more time with his family. Dr. Smith has served on the Boards of Directors of several private and public companies, been elected to membership or Fellowship in many professional and academic societies, received numerous awards for his academic and public service, and served on many nonprofit Boards of Directors.
