In 1972 when a man walked into the Greenville, Mississippi fire department reporting to work, there was nothing particularly extraordinary about this event, except that for the very first time in the history of the department, the man walking in was Black. This memoir follows the author's journey towards becoming the first Black firefighter on the scene.
