"Aboriginal people who choose to improve their education as adults often face many challenges, most of which arise from the ongoing impact of colonialism and of racialized poverty. Yet in Winnipeg's low-income inner city, a variety of innovative and effective Aboriginal adult education initiatives have emerged. Drawing upon the voices and experiences of Aboriginal adult learners themselves, Moving Forward and Giving Back illuminates the creative initiatives and strategies that have proven successful and transformative for adult Aboriginal students. However, it is not only individual adult learners whose lives are transformed. As the book reveals repeatedly, these education programs also positively affect the lives of their families. The ripple effect of these initiatives can even be felt on the community level. As a large proportion of graduates from inner city adult education programs choose to live in the communities in which they have grown up and work in some form of community development, these innovative adult education programs also serve as anti-poverty initiatives. Using examples from Winnipeg's inner city, Moving Forward and Giving Back posits that effective Aboriginal adult education initiatives need to be dramatically expanded to improve the health and vibrancy of Aboriginal people and communities across Canada.
