October 15, 2013, Toronto - Author and queer storyteller Ken Setterington will be talking about the history of the persecution of homosexuals by the Nazi regime during the Holocaust, the subject of his groundbreaking book Branded by the Pink Triangle . The evening will bring to light the experience of gay men in Germany during the 1930s and beyond, with photographs and survivor’s stories. Ken's book combines historical research, first person accounts, and individual voices to bring this time to life for readers. Stories of bravery in the face of inhuman cruelty, friendship found in the depths of despair in the camps, and the perseverance of the human spirit will both educate and inspire. Readers young and old, members of the LGBT community and their allies will read this book for its eye-opening exploration of this overlooked piece of history. "(The book) speaks volumes about a time that few LGBT youths today, contemplating who to take to the prom or the parade, would have knowledge about." - Judith Timson, The Toronto Star The talk will take place on Tuesday, November 5th at 7:30pm at the University of Toronto (New College), William Doo Auditorium, 45 Willcocks St. People can call 416-901-3831 for information.

This is a free lecture, with a book signing to follow. The event is a program of Neuberger HEW 2013 - Holocaust Education Week. It is co-presented by Facing History and Ourselves; The Equity Program, New College-University of Toronto; and Kulanu Toronto.
