About the Book Steve Hair (The Pennsylvania State University) is the new co-author on the 12th Edition , bringing a fresh eye to the content of the text and the MyLab(tm) Math course. Updated data in 440 exercises and examples helps students see the relevance in the topics they are studying. Revised Technology Solutions provide flexibility for instructors who incorporate technology. Many sections now rely on technology and less on complicated calculations. For example, instructors have the option of using TVM Solver for financial calculations instead of complicated formulas. Graphing calculator screens have been upgraded to the new TI-84 Plus CE format (color version) to aid student understanding. Additionally, discussions of Excel now refer to both Excel 2013 and Excel 2016. The Linear Inequalities Section now sits at the beginning of the linear programming chapter.

This places the topic in the chapter where it is used. Updated coverage of Counting Material to aid student comprehension of counting problems. These updates include rewrites of the permutation and combination formulas, a better definition of the complement rule for counting, and a new discussion of when to use various methods (addition, subtraction, or multiplication) for solving counting problems. A new section at the end of the Math of Finance chapter, called "A Unifying Equation" shows that the basic financial concepts, and many other calculations, can be described by a difference equation of the form yn = a * yn - 1 + b , y 0 given. Examples and exercises show that this equation can also help solve problems in physical, biological, and social sciences. Logic chapter now better meets student needs. By stating key ideas related to truth tables and implications in terms of logical equivalence, students are better equipped to understand these concepts. To help students understand when a logical argument is invalid, we expanded section 11.

5 to include more discussion of invalid arguments. "Help text" within examples (shown in blue type) helps students understand key algebraic and numerical transitions. Time-tested exercise sets (containing 3580 exercises) give instructors flexibility when building assignments, with exercises sorted by level, and exercises that encourage students to use technology to solve problems. Relevant and varied applications contain real data and provide a realistic look at how mathematics applies to other disciplines and everyday life. Whenever possible, applications are used to motivate the mathematics. The variety of applications is evident in the Index of Applications. The Difference Equation chapter is now available online-only . This chapter is available directly to students at www.

pearsonhighered.com/mathstatsresources and within MyLab Math(tm). All support materials for the chapter appear online within MyLab Math. Also available with MyLab Math MyLab(tm) Math is an online homework, tutorial, and assessment program designed to work with this text to engage students and improve results. Within its structured environment, students practice what they learn, test their understanding, and pursue a personalized study plan that helps them absorb course material and understand difficult concepts. With approximately 2540 exercises in MyLab Math, instructors now have more exercises than ever to choose from in assigning homework. We heard from users that the Annotated Instructor''s Edition for the previous edition required too much flipping of pages to find answers, so MyLab Math now contains a downloadable Instructor''s Answers document-- with all answers in one place . (This augments the downloadable Instructor''s Solutions Manual, which contains all solutions .

) Interactive Figures illustrate key concepts and allow manipulation for use as teaching and learning tools. These are now in HTML format (no plug-in required) and are supported by assignable exercises and tutorial videos. An Integrated Review MyLab Math course contains pre-made quizzes to assess the prerequisite skills needed for each chapter, plus personalized remediation for any gaps in skills that are identified. Setup & Solve exercises require students to show how they set up a problem as well as the solution, better mirroring what is required of students on tests. StatCrunch , a fully functional online statistics package, is provided to support the statistics content in the course. MathTalk and StatTalk videos highlight applications of the content of the course to business. The videos are supported by assignable exercises. Over 238 Example-based Videos , 110 of which are new to this edition, are available as learning aids within exercises and for self-study.

The Guide to Video-Based Assignments makes it easy to assign videos for homework by showing which MyLab Math exercises correspond to each video. Study skills modules help students with the life skills that can make the difference between passing and failing. Graphing Calculator videos, now available as learning aids within select exercises and in the Multimedia Library, complement the videos previously available that show to augment "by hand" methods. Students benefit from the just-in-time support, and instructors gain more flexibility in designing their courses. Graphing Calculator and Excel Spreadsheet Manuals , specific to this course, are now downloadable from MyLab Math. Learning Catalytics (tm) helps instructors generate class discussion, customize lectures, and promote peer-to-peer learning with real-time analytics. As a student response tool, Learning Catalytics uses students'' smartphones, tablets, or laptops to engage them in more interactive tasks and thinking. Help your students develop critical thinking skills.

Monitor responses to find out where your students are struggling. Rely on real-time data to adjust your teaching strategy. Automatically group students for discussion, teamwork, and peer-to-peer learning. Upload a full PowerPoint® deck for easy creation of slide questions. Team names are no longer case sensitive.
