To the Stoning: Leftist Erotica is a collection of ten short stories that alternate between mystic surrealism and caustic satire. In a variety of settings - Canada, Russia, Kazakhstan, and Japan - we find societies dominated by hysterical alarmism, in which permissiveness coexists with totalitarian control and characters respond to mundane problems with bizarre and fully unsuited solutions. A man visits a foreign country, spits gum into a river, and imagines himself implicated in a diplomatic row. The Prime Minister of Canada invokes religious freedom to bring back the death penalty. Exhibitionists flash genitals with impunity, while unwitting bystanders are accused of voyeurism. In these stories, Patrik Sampler creates a sparsely painted world of absurdity and paranoia, nevertheless dreamlike, and occasionally imbued with human feeling.
