Daniel Stellwagen - Artur Yusupov Amsterdam Rising Stars v Experience 2006 [Diagram] The 2006 Age versus Youth contest in Amsterdam resulted in a big success for the Rising Stars - and 15-year-old Magnus Carlsen in particular - but the Experience Team did lead after the first day, thanks to Arthur Yusupov's win over local hope Daniel Stellwagen. However the game, which at first sight was excellently played by the veteran, turned out to be not so smooth. Yusupov takes up the story: "Both sides were short of time and the right way to play this position for Black was to repeat moves twice to come closer to the move-40 time control. But I thought that I would win more easily if I took the h7-pawn." 37.Kxh7 "With only 20 seconds left, my opponent came to the same conclusion and resigned." However back in my hotel room I entered the game into the computer and of course the computer showed the truth at once!" Can you handle the truth? Bela Sandor - Zoltan Herendi Budapest 1948 [Diagram] Bela Sandor was one of postwar Hungary's strongest players, although his star shone brightly for only a short period. In 1953, Sandor won the Hungarian Championship and represented Hungary at the Amsterdam Chess Olympiad in 1954.

At the end of that year, Sandor was awarded the title of Worthy Athlete of the Hungarian People's Republic - the same title that was given to footballer Ferenc Puskas (in the same year) for leading Hungary to the World Cup final. Sandor was not awarded the International Master title until 1964, by which time he was working more as a trainer than a player. Sandor was famous for his love of the Pirc Defence (1.e4 d6) and also for his solid style - "though he could sometimes play brilliancies,"said his compatriot Laszlo Hazai. Such was the case in this game, against Candidate Master Zoltan Herendi. Sandor has just sacrificed his queen on f7 and Herendi felt obliged to resign, unable to capture the queen due to smothered mate, nor prevent Qg8+!! with another smothered mate. Yet Herendi should not have been overawed by his opponent's flair and could have escaped defeat and more. How?.
