Marilyn Porter is Professor Emeritus in the Department of Sociology, Memorial University. The eldest of a family of four, she was brought up in North Wales, UK and educated in England and Ireland. She came to Newfoundland in 1980, and has been active in the feminist movement ever since. She has been a granddaughter and daughter, and is now a mother and grandmother. Her academic concerns include women's economic lives, especially in rural or coastal communities, women in development, especially the use of feminist studies in development, and feminist methodology. She has authored or co-authored seven books and over a hundred articles and led several international research and development projects. Diana L. Gustafson is an Associate Professor of Social Science and Health in the Faculty of Medicine, Division of Community Health and Humanities and affiliate faculty in the Department of Women's Studies at Memorial University.

The eldest of five children, she was born on a Saskatchewan farm and grew up in communities across Western and Central Canada. She moved to Newfoundland and Labrador in 2003. She and her partner deeply grateful for being able to share their lives with their adult children and grandchildren. Her disciplinary roots in nursing, sociology, education and women's studies underpin her interest in motherwork and health-related social justice issues.
