Discusses networks of fully protected marine reserves (MR), which are the best tool for managing marine ecosystems. However, there are limits to how well MR can effect ecosystem rebounds, & these limits are becoming better understood. The best way to protect & preserve marine resources is to establish dense networks of MR of varying sizes & spacing. MR systems intended to help sustain healthy ecosystems must include representatives of all habitat types, & have sufficient monitoring. Research should include social & economic effects of MR as well as their impact on regional marine ecosystems. MR should be part of an overall coordinated plan to protect & utilize sustainable marine ecosystems throughout the U.S. Photos.
