This text is, in my view, the best available, because of its intellectual qualities (it is comprehensive and offers an ideal blend of story-telling with analytical sections) and also because of its literary qualities: it is extremely easy to read without being simplistic. This is precisely what a textbook should do. There is a clear demand for a book like this and OUP should give the author the possibility to update/revise this book periodically, so that recentdevelopments in Cuban society can be included in the text. - Alejandro de la Fuente, University of PittsburghIn my view, there is not a similar text on this particular discipline. Maybe in other topics about the Cuban Revolution, racial struggles, and so on but not in general history.Professor Pérez made an admirable effort to effectively summarize into readable narratives the long historical trajectory of Cuba and its people. Its conversational style captivates us while presenting five hundred years of history without overwhelming statistics or facts. Stillthe text manages to inform and educate in a very enlightening way.

This book is the best text available about Cuban history. -Hunter CollegeI use the current edition because it is clear and realiable for answering any detail or any question a student might have. I think this book is recognized as "the" Cuban history book. I also like the new format; somehow it seems more accessible to students as a textbook.I do think that it is written at an appropriate level for the students.this is the only text that is this comprehensive and historically complex. It is the only book I would use for myHistory of Cuba classes. -Mariola Espinosa, Southern Illinois UniversityThis text is more engaging, detailed, and up-to-date than any other text on the market.

It is an accessible, well written text that manages to cover an impressive amount of material without becoming dull or dry. Based on a range of quantitative and other types of evidence, the book provides a balanced, objective analysis of the course of Cuban history.this is hands down the best overall textbook for Cuban history. -Marc McLeod, Seattle UniversityPerez''s history of Cuba is one of the best "national" histories available for students of Latin America. Authoritative, yet highly readable, it provides an outstanding introduction to Cuba''s history. The principal strength is the book''s ability to treat issues such as independence and the formation of the early republic as crucial in their own right rather than as simple precursors to the emergence of Castro and the Cuban Revolution.Perez''s history of Cubaprovides a sophisticated understanding of the big picture, an ability to portray the sweep of Cuban history rather than the importance of particular episodes. It is unmatched in this respect.

-Sujay Rao, Gustavus Adolphus CollegeThis is by now the standard work on the subject. I know of no other single volume that approaches its extraordinary breadth and clarity. The bibliographic essay alone is a priceless resource. Beginning students can use it to launch research projects and more seasoned scholars can approach the essay as a very useful primer on historiography. This is the most authoritative synthesis available. The author is regarded as the dean of Cuban studies in the UnitedStates and that certainly helps. But the text does not coast on the author''s reputation; it is built on exhaustive research and a peerless command of the historiography. -Reinaldo Roman, University of Georgia"Elegant in style, impressive in documentation, balanced in coverage, this book is probably the best single-volume study of Cuban history available.

"--Franklin W. Knight, Johns Hopkins University"Pérez has placed Castro''s revolution within the Cuban revolutionary tradition, which reaches deep in Cuban history. And he has earned for himself the designation of premier Cuban scholar in the United States."--Lester Langley, University of Georgia"[Perez''s] judgment is cautious, his interpretation prudently orthodox, his selection of themes balanced, his language consistently restrained. Cuba: Between Reform and Revolution is workmanlike, accessible, and readable. It is, without doubt, the first book that newcomers to the subject should approach, as well as being a valuable work for specialists. It merits a wide audience."--Christopher Abel, University College-London.
