Amos Gallant arrived at the small farming community unannounced. He was a secretive man and had only one friend, a young boy whom he took under is wing. One day Amos Gallant is attacked and his young friend saves his life, setting into motion a journey of almost a year and returning Gallant to Europe, where he had escaped from a German prisoner-of-war camp. Six men had survived that escape together fifteen years previously, and three of them were dead. Their one remaining common bond was a secret that all shared, and Gallant now has to return to expose this secret, needing his young friend to aid him in this return trip. The boy becomes a man on this trip, as they bicycle through Portugal, Spain, France, and Switzerland, plotting, planning, and not knowing who to trust.
