Two gruesome murders have occurred, one in Boston and another 200 miles away in a small logging town. Detective Lazar travels to the logging town following a hunch; his reporter girlfriend, Carrie, is right behind. They meet a local man, Greg, whom the lumberjacks regard with a strange sort of awe, and who Carrie finds attractive. Greg is also somehow familiar to Lazar, but he can't place the reason.Far away in the mountains, three men worry over the two murders, and fear they might be next. They set off grimly for the logging town to take preemptive action. Carrie takes a break and flies over the forests to Quebec to her sister, Charlene, who is gravely ill. Carrie is fearful she will never see Charlene alive again.
During a lumberjack competition in the logging town, a chain saw breaks and slashes open a man's forearm. Greg closes the wound with his bare hands, and, exhausted, asks for Carrie's help to get him home. There, in front of a fire, he admits to his unusual healing abilities. Meanwhile, Lazar believes Greg is the murderer. The three bad guys have arrived in the town. When Greg takes Carrie back to her B&B, they recognize Greg as the man they seek. Greg drives up into the hills above the town, and eludes the three.Carrie makes an unannounced visit to Greg's cabin.
She is seized by the three bad guys. Greg appears, shatters the door with his bare hands, kills one of the intruders. But another shoots him several times, and Greg staggers down the porch steps, gravely wounded. Next day, Greg struggles to heal his wounds in a rushing forest stream.Months later, Carrie is with Charlene, who seems near death. Greg arrives unexpectedly, takes Charlene in his arms and instills new vigor in her. Greg leaves to pursue the remaining bad guys, Chuck and Chris, drug dealers whom he knew in wartime. At Chuck's mountain home past midnight, Greg breaks in and threatens both men.
They flee down the mountain to the town below. Greg catches up, and Lazar appears. Lazar warns Greg to back off, and Chuck fires at Greg, hitting Lazar. The bad guys drive off, slip on ice, crash fatally. Greg bends over Lazar and, before healing his wound, makes a bargain for his freedom.
