Lucy Maud Montgomery, known as Maud, was born in 1874 on Prince Edward Island, Canada, where Anne of Green Gables is set. Maud's mother died when she was just a baby and so Maud was brought up by her strict grandparents. She became a teacher, and although she didn't enjoy, it gave her lots of time to write. She had her first poem published at the age of 15, and went on to write hundreds of short stories, poems, and novels throughout her life. Anne ofGreen Gables was published in 1908 and was an immediate success. She died in 1942.Lewis Carroll's real name was Charles Lutwidge Dodgson. He was born on 27th January 1832 at Daresbury in Cheshire.
He studied at Christ Church College, Oxford University and later became a mathematics lecturer there. He wrote Alice's Adventures in Wonderland (1865) and Through the Looking Glass (1871) for the daughters of the Dean of Christ Church. He was very fond of puzzles and some readers have found mathematical jokes and codes hidden in his Alice books. Dodgson was alsoan influential photographer. He died on 14th January 1898. Frances Hodgson Burnett was born in 1849 in Manchester. After her father's death the family moved to Tennessee, USA in 1865. She started writing for magazinessoon after moving to the United States and went on to write, and have published, a number of adult novels.
Little Lord Fauntleroy was published in 1886 followed by A Little Princess in 1905 and The Secret Garden in 1911. These children's books are what she is now best known for, although her adult novels were very popular during her life. Frances Hodgson Burnett because a US citizen in 1905 and died in 1924. Anna Sewell was born in 1820 in Great Yarmouth, Norfolk,England. At the age of fourteen she injured both of her ankles in an accident, which meant that she could never walk properly again. Because of this she relied heavily on travelling in horse-drawn carriages, and it was from herethat her love of horses grew. In 1871 Anna began writing a book aimed at encouraging more humane treatment of horses. Owing to her failing health the story took nearly seven years to complete but was eventually published in 1877.
Sadly, Anna never got to know of the huge success of Black Beauty, her only book, as she died in 1878, five months after the book's publication.
