Ambitious lawyer, valiant soldier, devoted husband and father, and clever politician, Aaron Burr is remembered most for the duel in which he fatally wounded his archenemy, Alexander Hamilton. A cultured, well-educated man, Burr supported the education of women and the abolition of slavery far ahead of his time. Burr served as New York attorney general, U.S. senator, and U.S. vice president. However, his dual with the slanderous Hamilton, his land intrigues and schemes in the Southwest, and his later indictment and acquittal for treason dogged Burr until his death.
