If you are interested in domesticated and wild animals or pets in Wales and are seven to eleven years old, or know someone who belongs to this age group, this is the book for you.Author Elin Meek and illustrator Eric Heyman have produced a resource suitable for home or school, which is also available in Welsh. This is a great book for dipping into for information on a range of creatures from cows and sheep to dogs and cats and goats, deer and mice or for reading from cover to cover. With eye-catching and practical use of colour, the material is presented in uncluttered self-contained sections which are full of well selected photographs and graphics as well as questions, answers and further details. Both younger and more reluctant readers will appreciate the way in which the text is broken up, as well as the sensible use of features such as bullet points and a range of fonts to make content manageable. Humorous cartoons raise a smile as well as support the content, unfamiliar vocabulary is highlighted and explained in useful footnotes, and the contents page and index handily reinforce the text's educational potential for individuals as well as for classroom use. What makes this book stand out is the way the author involves 21st century-children, particularly those in Wales, by encouraging an active engagement through the 'Did you know' format and by providing sound information as well as directly relevant snippets. For example, did you know that the oldest cat in the world may have lived in Llanelli, that after eating rotten fruit badgers are said to behave as if they are drunk or that corgi dogs - 'cor' meaning 'small' and 'ci' meaning 'dog' - were used to round up cattle? The author and illustrator know and understand their audience and have produced another book to be welcomed to the bookshelf.
