Johnston McCulley (February 2, 1883 - November 23, 1958) was an influential American writer, best known for creating the legendary character Zorro. Born in Ottawa, Illinois, McCulley started his career as a police reporter before transitioning into a prolific writer of pulp fiction. A master of serialized storytelling, he contributed to numerous pulp magazines throughout the early 20th century.McCulley's most famous creation debuted in "The Curse of Capistrano," serialized in the pulp magazine All-Story Weekly in 1919. This tale introduced readers to the swashbuckling hero Don Diego Vega, better known as Zorro. The character's masked persona, skilled swordsmanship, and fight for justice quickly captivated audiences, leading to Zorro becoming a mainstay in popular culture through books, films, and television series.In addition to Zorro, McCulley authored a wide array of detective stories, westerns, and adventure tales under various pseudonyms.
