This book explores the rise of Shi'i activism in Lebanon and across the Middle East, drawing parallels with other theologies of liberation in the region as well as in Latin America and South Africa. Over much of the last century, Islamic movements have existed in opposition to a number of different forces, including colonial authorities, authoritarian governments, and occupation forces. However, this resistance has at times been contradictory as many Islamic movements have also often been complicit in their own domestic capitalist systems and class structures, resulting in a problematic notion of revolution and counterrevolution.Based on more than two years of ethnographic fieldwork in Lebanon, and employing a Gramscian framework, this distinctive book addresses crucial questions regarding the future of the Islamic project, by examining Shi'i activist movements in Lebanon that enjoy immense popular support, but which have also faced many challenges since entering into electoral politics and achieving power.Marusek looks carefully at the Islamic Resistance movement in particular, focusing on the social institutions affiliated with Hizbullah and its allies to better understand how resistance is lived in daily lives, as well as how a culture of resistance is reproduced within the community. The book offers a timely analysis of how the resistance movement is negotiating its newly acquired political and economic powers in relation to its activist origins, asking what impact this negotiation may have on the wider resistance project and decolonial aspirations globally.
