Dino is a descendant of the Sinclair - Gay families, both originally from Scotland who arrived in Hawaii via New Zealand in the mid-to late-1800s. Elizabeth Sinclair traveled to Kauai after the death of her husband in New Zealand. Elizabeth Sinclair purchased the island of Niihau from King Kamehameha V in 1864, as well as a good portion of land in Makaweli, on the westside of the island of Kauai. The Gay and Robinson family operated a sugar plantation on the land purchased by Elizabeth Sinclair in Makaweli. The island and the Makaweli lands are still owned by the Sinclair - Robinson family. The Sinclair, Robinson, and Gay families are a significant part of the history of Kauai and Niihau. Dino is a fifth generation descendant of Elizabeth Sinclair and currently resides in California.
