Town of Evening Calm, Country of Cherry Blossoms
What impact did WWII and the dropping of the atomic bomb have on the people of Japan? Through the eyes of an average Japanese woman in 1955, acclaimed artist Fumiyo Kouno attempts to address this question. Kouno's light, free style of drawing evokes a tender reflection on this difficult period in Hiroshima's postwar history. As the characters go about their daily lives, the shadow of the war and the destruction of the bomb linger ghostlike in the background.
