The illustrations were made using a technique called collagraphy - a printmaking technique in which objects with interesting textures are inked, and a piece of paper is placed on top so that the paper picks up the ink. Kids and parents will definitely appreciate the textures, and how refreshing and different the work is for anything else that is out there. The book can also be used as an introduction to printmaking, a way to talk about the basic ideas behind print. It thus has connections to and applications for an audience outside of just the children's world. This book serves as a great introduction to the animal world and has a strong potential connection with the teaching and educational markets. The book has classroom applications, but is also a book that parents can read at home with their kids. A great resource for all programs bringing art into the classroom and could serve as the reference for a whole unit on print-making with everyday objects. With some indie bookstores now working with schools on supplying classroom books, the usefulness of this book for elementary school arts education should be stressed.
