This book contains a word-for-word transcription of the first four Settlements, Wills and Bonds books of Stewart County, Tennessee, covering the years 1804 through 1824. These bound volumes contained transcriptions of original loose records of the County Court (Court of Pleas and Quarter Sessions), primarily including settlements, wills, bonds and tax lists. While often called the 'will books,' these books also contained transcriptions of the bonds executed by county officials, and financial settlements made with the County Court (Court of Pleas and Quarter Sessions) by guardians, administrators, executors and county officials. Tax lists were also transcribed into the books from 1804 through 1811. The books also contained transcriptions of bastardy bonds, financial receipts, and in some cases, trial dockets. The original records transcribed into these books by the County Court Clerk - the bonds, wills, settlements and tax lists themselves - would have been filed in the office of the County Court Clerk after being transcribed into the bound volumes. However, the original records do not survive - only portions of the bound volumes into which they were transcribed. Some of the original Settlements, Wills and Bonds books are at the Stewart County Courthouse in Dover and are available on microfilm at the Stewart County Public Library in Dover and the Tennessee State Library and Archives (TSLA).
