Matthew Johnston has had a lifelong love for the ocean. Diagnosed with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy at a young age, Matthew faces a number of physical challenges including quadriplegia, scoliosis, and being ventilator dependent. From 2004-2007, in collaboration with Ocean Opportunity, the 'Diving a Dream' project was created to enable a pioneering quest to achieve Matt's dream. During this pursuit, Matt achieved a number of industry firsts including being among the first quadriplegics to dive, being the first ventilator dependent diver in both a pool and in the ocean, and earning certification #001 through Scuba Diving International's (SDI) Scubility Program. The story reached millions of people in the US and abroad. Matt is considered a pioneer in adaptive scuba, and remains a strong advocate of protecting the world's oceans.
