Amelia Frances Howard-Gibbon Award Honor Book A bog is a wetland in which a mass of moss has grown, often many feet deep, so that it is spongy. Many animals and plants make the bog their home. But this unique environment is fragile; all over the world, bogs are disappearing as a result of development, the death of wetlands, and a general disinterest in the environment. In this story a bog is beautifully described in its early years. The narrator and his grandfather visit the newly formed bog and see sandhill cranes and wild plum; then they go home and make wild bog tea. As the narrator grows into a man, he continues to visit the bog with his grandfather and watches it mature. Finally, after his grandfather's death, the narrator revisits the bog and remembers the years of his boyhood.
