The volumes in the series are designed to be suitable for undergraduate and graduate courses in teacher education and foreign language and ESL pedagogy, as well as for individual use by graduate students, teacher trainers, and practicing teachers. Double Talk draws on six real-life stories of second language use. Personal observations offer foreign language teachers-both novice and experienced-an opportunity to reflect critically on a variety of issues related to foreign language teaching. An analysis of each of these language stories, together with their pedagogical implications, provides a forum for discussion. Each chapter of Double Talk includes eight principal sections: 1) Overview This brief section provides a summary of the theoretical perspectives and the content of the chapter. 2) Snapshot Using mostly first-person narration, the snapshots are language stories from the author's own experience that have served as a catalyst for her rethinking of foreign language learning and teaching. These stories create a context for exploring how two (or more) languages can function in second language development. 3) Research perspectives This section reviews research in fields that are not always traditionally related to foreign language teaching and learning.
This research and its theoretical underpinnings serve to illumine ways in which the language phenomena presented in the snapshots offer important insights into foreign language learning and teaching. 4) Perspectives for the classroom Drawing on the stories in the snapshot and the relevant research, this section outlines the practical implications for the foreign language classroom. At the end of this section there are specific references to principles designed to foster the development of multi-competent second language learners. 5) Your view Each chapter is punctuated by five or six boxes labeled "Your View" designed to elicit critical reflection on the material presented. 6) Concluding propositions Three concluding propositions summarize the theoretical and practical approach outlined in each chapter. 7) Suggested readings Provides a list of readings pertinent to the subjects discussed in each chapter. 8) Researching your own language stories At the end of each chapter there are two suggestions for further research based on the critical reflection called for in "Your View.".
