After hunter and trapper Brent Walker, has seen Maisie, Matt and Fergus safely aboard the California bound wagon train, he wheels his horse 'Crow Foot' around, and sets off for the distant, snow clad mountains, once more. Once there, he plans to meet up with his old friend Tom, a fellow hunter and fur trapper, whom he has known and hunted with for many years. However, he doesn't expect a ghost from his recent past to turn up, especially when this ghost, firstly follows Tom through the mountain forest and then reveals a secret, which lands Brent and Tom, in a difficult situation. Brent and Tom get embroiled in a fight for the survival of a way of life, which is increasingly under threat from White settler's, the U.S. Army and the spread of disease and famine, amongst the Native Americans. In the midst of these unfolding events, Brent meets and falls in love with, the beautiful daughter of the Chief of a Comanche village, which is under threat. Will Brent ever manage to get to California to see Maisie and the others, as he said he would do, or will he regret not going with them and the wagon train, when he had the chance to do so, before.
