Steroid-induced eczema, also known as Red Skin Syndrome (RSS) or topical steroid addiction (TSA), is a condition in which the body becomes dependent on topical steroid creams requiring stronger and stronger creams to obtain relief. Taming the Scratchy Monster is a beautifully illustrated picture book explaining in simple terms how the body may react during withdrawal from topical steroid creams. Written by a sufferer of superimposed steroid-induced eczema, the story reflects the author's and a 3-year-old child's journey through withdrawal. The author is now experiencing significant improvement of the skin after enduring an intense 'rebound' phase that lasted many months. The child's journey, though painful, resulted in a cure. The experience of withdrawal inspired this book for children and adults who are also going through this painful process. In this story, the protagonist, Billy, endures many harsh conditions including a dry desert, an oozy swamp and a hot volcano in his efforts to escape the 'scratchy monster'. These conditions mirror the way the skin may behave during the withdrawal process.
