Dance Quote Unquote combines dance criticism, memoir, and social history to describe the turbulent world of postmodern dance. Johnston was there, from the '50s through the early '70s, chronicling the work of choreographers as varied as Trisha Brown, Meredith Monk, Steve Paxton, and Lucinda Childs, as well as the happenings of artists Robert Rauschenberg and Allan Kaprow, and the "events" of Merce Cunningham and John Cage.
