Following an honorable discharge from the U. S. Navy, Lloyd worked as a computer operator for a couple of years before becoming a life insurance agent in 1968. One of the first things he was taught was how to counsel widows on the use of life insurance proceeds, savings, inheritances, and other monies in the event their husband and children's father died.He was licensed to sell all forms of insurance. He was also a licensed stock broker and Registered Investment Advisor. Part of his education is through the American College for Financial Services. During the 1990s he taught a Financial Planning Skills course to insurance agents for an industry association.

After working for three insurance/financial services companies, Lloyd started his own insurance, financial planning and consulting agency, LRJ Planning Advisors LLC. He retired in 2006.From 2007 through 2015, Lloyd was a faculty team member of Presbyterian CREDO, a program of the Board of Pensions of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.). He was a member of a team of 8 people who, twice a year, hosted week-long conferences for up to 35 Presbyterian pastors. The pastors examined their spiritual life, vocational life, their personal finances, their physical health and mental health.

Lloyd and a colleague conducted financial planning workshops, compensation and tax planning workshops during the conferences. They also conducted one-on-one consultations with 10 to 12 of the pastors per conference who brought their personal and family financial concerns. In 2010, Lloyd completed the Commissioned Lay Pastor program with the Presbytery of New York City's Institute for Laity at Auburn Theological Seminary.
