William James (1842-1910) - the 'Father of American psychology' - was a groundbreaking philosopher, historian and psychologist. A key figure in the establishment of the schools of pragmatism, functional psychology and radical empiricism, he influenced all manner of thinkers, from W.E.B. Du Bois to Bertrand Russell. Professor Marika Taylor (Series Foreword) is a Professor of Theoretical Physics and Head of School within Mathematical Sciences at the University of Southampton. Her research interests include all aspects of string theory, gravitational physics and quantum field theory.
