As the authors maintain in their introduction, they have transformed Wales''s castles, once symbols of alien oppression, into home decorations to be proud of. This volume combines the functional and the aesthetic: clear instructions, in both Welsh and English, on how to make a beautiful embroidery, as well as some historical background on the castles depicted. Since the authors/designers aim to satisfy the needs and skills of beginners as well as experienced cross-stitchers, the complexity and overall effect of the designs are varied. Some designs, such as those of Aberystwyth, Cilgerran and Flint, are very plain, while others are striking and pose more of a technical challenge: Talacharn, Raglan, Powis, Pembroke, Harlech and Caernarfon.

The more sophisticated designs, which use half-stitches and shading etc, are, on the whole, the most pleasing. However some of the simplest designs, such as Dolbadarn and Dolwyddelan castles, are also amongst the most attractive. Much thought and practical experience have evidently gone into this volume. For example, the charts are an excellent size (A3 folding neatly into A4) which means that they are not only easy to follow but that they are gentler on the eyes! The fact that it is bound with a ring binder ensures that pages stay down effortlessly, without the usual danger of damaging the book''s spine. Furthermore, the patterns are versatile enough to allow individuals to vary the colours and design of borders, should they chose to add a personal touch or should they wish to embroider a series of their favourite castles. One minor criticism is that, rather than grouping the charts together in the back, it would, perhaps, be more expedient to position them alongside the corresponding colour photograph? This would certainly facilitate comparison between the chart and the end result during the creative process. Whatever your ability, whether a novice or a seasoned cross-stitcher, the charts in this well-thought-out volume will help create a permanent memento of your favourite Welsh castles.
