Ed is not an heroic figure but manages to triumph over tragedy by taking life as it comes and going with the flow. His journey takes him along English canals and into remote West African villages. At every stage he learns something about people and the elements necessary to bring happiness to those he loves. Not utopian but shows how people are the same all over the world, irrespective of race/colour/creed.
