Edward (Ted) Todd travels to a small harbour town on the south coast of England to hear the last will and testament of an old friend - the reverend Martin Lowther. But an encounter with a mysterious woman compels him to investigate the circumstances of his late friend's death. He embarks on a strange voyage of discovery which leads him ultimately to the heart of Christianity itself.
