The first intent is to allowdevelopers who know at least one of the covered languages on another platform toquickly come up to speed on the OpenVMS platform. The second is to assistcurrent OpenVMS developers finding themselves having to work with a differentlanguage their current language become productive.A single application is developed over and over again in each of the languages.Both RMS Indexed file development and relational development are covered in thebook.

When working with MySQL only the C language is covered. The accompanyingCD-ROM contains the source code developed in the book. By being able to comparethe source code for the same application in different languages the reader canquickly get a feeling for the design trade offs and benefits of each languagecovered.The screen handler covered is FMS. While this may be one of the oldest, if notthe oldest, screen handling/forms development packages on OpenVMS, it does havea very large base in production systems. If you are new to the OpenVMSenvironment you will encounter it. Once you know this forms management systemyou should be able to quickly pick up the other screen handling/forms productson this platform.
